Italians go Crazy over Privacy
I just finished reading an article about how several Google executives were tried in an Italian court for a video that was searchable by the Italian Google. Somebody posted a video that showed an autistic boy being harassed and bullied by fellow schoolmates. Four Google executives were charged with "criminal defamation and violation of the Italian privacy code". I find it hard to understand why Italian officials would press charges over something like this. How is it Google's fault that somebody posted such a video? However I do agree that it is a terrible video and it was rightfully taken off the internet. Google is a search engine that finds virtually everything. I would understand if Google had refused to take down the video, but as soon as they found out, they got rid of it. This just seems such a harsh depiction of internet privacy. I understand that there have to be privacy laws, but this is obscene. The executives were found guilty of breaking the Italian Privacy Code, essentially saying that Google is responsible for everything that goes on the internet. Does anybody else feel like I do? I honestly can't say that anybody would feel differently but I would like to see that argument from the other side.
